“I grew up watching re-runs of ‘Perry Mason’ and loads of outdated black and white stuff and I appreciated it, however I didn’t adore it and I didn’t adore it as a result of I wasn’t in it,” the 33-year-old actor stated in a pre-recorded interview on Friday. “I wasn’t represented in any method, form or kind. Nor was my mom, my good friend, my cousin, anybody in any respect. So regardless of how good these classics are, I don’t care. I simply [don’t] care, as a result of they don’t care about me.”

“I don’t know if you recognize, you don’t go house to loads of black folks’s homes on TV,” Chalk stated. “You don’t go to their house, they don’t exist, they’re props …

“I feel that’s what, for me, makes the present tremendous particular as a result of it doesn’t simply cease at Perry’s story, it strikes on and says, ‘however that is what this black male is coping with in the ’30s too,’ which makes this present highly effective, which makes this present greater than entertaining, it makes the present essential as a result of now my mother can watch the present and provides a s–t. It’s good to provide a s–t about good TV and never simply be a watcher of good TV, however to be a collaborator in it.”

The moderator then requested Chalk if his scenes wherein he needed to sit again and take issues as a result of of the time interval of the present was difficult for him to play.

“Man, that is such a bummer of a solution, however no it’s not difficult,” he stated. “I grew up in the South, in North Carolina. No, it’s life, it’s life in California at the moment to some extent.”

He added, “There’s at all times a veil that I feel folks of coloration and even girls put on to outlive in sure industries and leisure is one of them. It’s thrilling to be half of a present thats not excited by the veil, they’re excited by the core of all of it, so they permit me to have conversations that appear awfully deep and awfully harmful, however on this set they’re not harmful, they’re welcomed they usually’re integrated … It was thrilling to know that the care that has gone into the method I expertise life, is how the writers and creators have created this, with the similar quantity of care and that makes me really feel excellent.”
