Homeland Safety Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Sunday insisted the Biden administration has “closed” the border with Mexico to migrant households — but stated they won’t flip again unaccompanied children.
“Our message has been easy and easy. And it’s true, the border is closed.
We’re expelling households. We’re expelling single adults. And we’ve decided that we are going to not expel younger, susceptible children. I feel we’re executing on our plans,” Mayorkas stated on NBC Information’ “Meet the Press.”
But he was pressed by host Chuck Todd who questioned whether or not dad and mom in Mexico and Central America are taking a look at that coverage and pondering their children have a greater likelihood of getting within the US in the event that they attempt to cross the border alone.
“Now we have a short-term plan, a medium-term plan and a long-term plan, and the president and I’ve spoken to this repeatedly. Please bear in mind one thing: That [former] President [Donald] Trump dismantled the orderly, humane and environment friendly method of permitting children to make their claims underneath United States legislation of their house nations,” the secretary stated.
Mayorkas stated the administration is attempting to rebuild these insurance policies.
“In the meantime, we won’t expel into the Mexican desert, for instance, three orphaned children whom I noticed during the last two weeks. We simply won’t do this. That’s not who we’re,” he stated.
He repeated President Biden’s message to not journey to the US.
“We’re safely processing the children who do come to our border. We strongly urge, and the message is clear, not to take action now. I can not overstate the perils of the journey that they take,” Mayorkas stated.
Republicans blame the hundreds of unaccompanied minors arriving on the border on Biden for rolling again a lot of Trump’s immigration insurance policies that had been supposed to discourage folks from touring to the US.
Biden, in a collection of government actions since getting into the White Home, has ended building on the border wall and reversed Trump’s “Stay in Mexico” coverage that required asylum seekers to attend of their house nations for the authorized system to think about their circumstances.
