Angoulême 2025: The triumph of children are well, mugana and promised the sky [palmarès]
Nathan Ambrosioni wins the Diamant Valois, Marie-Hélène Roux’s film leaves with three trophies including that of the public and best actor for Isaach de Bankolé, just like that of Erige Sehiri, especially awarded for its staging.
Forgotten the bug of last year when the jury of Kristin Scott-Thomas had chosen to completely snub Rabia (and the performance of Morgan Northam, praised unanimously everywhere in the process). That of Diane Kruger seemed in total agreement with what we have perceived from the feeling of the public in theaters since Monday. There will necessarily be disappointed, including in relation to what we would have liked to see us awarded (Mélanie Thierry in The woman ofJulien Hosmalin for the realization of Mercilessly…) But none of the choices made suffer from a real dispute.
And as we were pressing it from the start of this competition, Children are doing wellthe magnificent third feature by Nathan Ambrosioni, therefore won the Diamond Valois, succeeding the prize list Twenty gods de Louise Courvoisier. This story of voluntary disappearance of a woman (Juliette Armanet) who entrusted her two children to her sister (Camille Cottin) forced to adapt to a situation which exceeds her also doubled the bet with the special mention of the jury for her two very young performers, Manoa Varvat and Nina Birman. At only 26 years old, Ambrosioni confirms the increasingly important place he occupies and will occupy in French cinema.
But two other films also tied up under the awards this evening. First of all Mugarga- the one who treatsthe first feature by Marie-Hélène Roux devoted to Doctor Denis Mukwegé, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018 for her constant commitment to repair genital mutilation made to women in the Congo Republic. This project, which has taken so many years to emerge, has managed a full card by combining the public prize, the price of the student jury … and the male interpretation price for Isaach de Bankolé, particularly impressive in the title role.
Promised the sky And her portrait of the sub-Saharan community having migrated to Tunisia also received three trophies: the realization for Erige Sehiri, the scenario (co-written by the director, Malika Cécile Louati and Anna Ciennik) and the female interpretation for Debora Lobe Naney, flamboyant for her debut on the screen.
The inverters From Chloé Aïcha Borro, plunged into Burkina-Faso against the background of the rise of jihadism through the relationship between a little girl and her grandmother that she will push to reconnect with the love of her youth, completes the charts with the price of best music for Cyrille Aufort. A more than welcome help for this first fictional feature of the director, selected in Angoulême without having a distributor. The same situation of one of the great winners of last year, A bicycle! by Mathias Meklutz for whom the festival was the most beautiful of springboards. And necessarily encouraged Dominique Besnehard, Marie-France Brière and Marie Carrot, the trio in charge of the selection, to bring together this year (except for Promised the sky which had opened a certain look) that unpublished films in competition. What by Ricochet will strengthen in the future the prescribing power of Angoulême, by relying on the public which rushed into mass in the rooms to the point of blowing up the reservation site in 3 minutes on the day of the sale of the pass (25 euros for 10 places to share, a tour de force!) And to push the organizers to add a day of projections for the films of the competition on Saturday. French cinema – and French -speaking – could only dream of returning to the start of the school year than this 2025 edition of Angoulême.
