Biotech researcher bought 800 castor beans to extract ricin, feds say

A analysis director at a Massachusetts biotechnology agency has been arrested by federal authorities for allegedly attempting to purchase the extremely poisonous poison ricin, officers mentioned Tuesday.

Dr. Ishtiaq Ali Saaem, 37, who has a doctorate in biomedical engineering, allegedly wished to extract the toxin from 100 packets of castor beans that he ordered, in accordance to the US Legal professional’s Workplace for Massachusetts.

Every packet contained eight beans.

Saaem, who’s from Pennsylvania, is accused of mendacity to investigators who questioned his buy, telling them that he solely meant to purchase one packet of castor beans to plant and enhance his house with, prosecutors mentioned.

After the primary inquiry, prosecutors mentioned Saaem researched home made tasteless poisons.

In a second assembly with authorities, he once more claimed the castor beans have been merely meant for planting at house.
