Brendan Fraser received a surprise birthday celebration on the set of Batgirl.
Production on the upcoming DC Extended Universe film Batgirl is now ongoing. The film, which stars In the Heights star Leslie Grace as the titular heroine Barbara Gordon has been in development for years, even with Joss Whedon previously attached before he departed the project. Now, as cameras start to roll, Leslie Grace will also be joined by returning DCEU actor J.K. Simmons and Brendan Fraser as the antagonist known as Firefly.
Brendan Fraser recently celebrated his 53rd birthday. In commemoration for the occasion, a special birthday cake was made for him and brought for his enjoyment on the Batgirl set. Co-director Adil El Arbi shared a video of the occasion on his official Instagram, which you can find down below:
Batgirl is not Brendan Fraser’s first rodeo with the DC Universe. He also has a role in the acclaimed HBO Max original series, Doom Patrol as Robotman. With these two roles, it’s safe to say that he is building himself up as one of the comic book brand’s acting giants.
Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are set to direct Batgirl, which is being planned as a movie for the WarnerMedia streaming service HBO Max. The two most recently directed the 2020 box office hit Bad Boys for Life and episodes of the upcoming Disney Plus series Ms. Marvel. Christina Hodson, the screenwriter behind Birds of Prey and The Flash, penned the script.
The Batgirl movie is set to follow the Barbara Gordon iteration of the Gotham City heroine. Barbara was last seen in a live-action feature film in Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin, with Alicia Silverstone playing the iconic DC Comics character. JK Simmons also stars as Commissioner Gordon, with Brendan Fraser appearing as the villain Firefly.
