‘Captain America 4’ Will Test Sam Wilson’s Leadership Abilities

Captain America: New World Order director Julius Onah says that the upcoming film will test Sam Wilson’s leadership abilities.

At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Steve Rogers passed the Captain America mantle to Sam Wilson. Unfortunately, it was one that Wilson did not want at first, and had to reclaim the mantle from John Walker in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. By the time the series ended he had fully embraced the role.

After the series ended, it was relevead that a new Captain America film was in the works starring Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson. Julius Onah signed on to direct the project later that year. Additional details for the film came out during this year’s D23 which included the fact that Tim Blake Nelson’s The Leader would be one of the film’s primary antagonists. Now the director is giving fans a clue as to what Sam Wilson’s arc will be in the upcoming film.

While speaking to ET, Julius Onah hinted at Sam Wilson’s arc in Captain America: New World Order, revealing that a big part of it would involve testing his ability to lead others:

“We’re really testing him. And now that he’s taken the mantle of Captain America, he’s really going to question what it means to lead. And all the action and all the emotionality of the story is really built around him answering that question. His values are going to determine so much of what’s going to happen moving forward. We’re putting that to the test in this film.”

Anthony Mackie’s Captain America was last seen in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Here is the synopsis for the series:

Following the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) team up in a global adventure that tests their abilities—and their patience—in Marvel Studios’ “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.”

Directed by Kari Skogland from scripts written by showrunner Malcolm Spellman and Derek Kolstad, the series stars Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Falcon, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier, Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter, Daniel Brühl as Baron Helmut Zemo, and Wyatt Russell as John Walker/U.S. Agent. Desmond Chiam, Miki Ishikawa, Noah Mills, and Carl Lumbly also appear.

The Falcon and the Winter Solider is currently available to stream on Disney Plus while Captain America: New World Order will release in theaters on May 3, 2024.
