Dermot Mulroney knows how to get to Carnegie Hall.
The 58-year-old actor, who has played cello for many years, told Page Six that he has an ambitious dream for his non-acting life: Playing Vivaldi’s “Concerto for 2 Cellos in G minor” with none other than Yo-Yo Ma.
Despite confirming that we don’t know the acclaimed cellist personally, Mulroney had a request for us nevertheless.
“If you see him wandering the streets of New York with his [Stradivarius] on his shoulder, stop him and tell him Dermot wants to play that piece of music with him,” he said.
“I saw him play; he’s not that many years older than me,” the actor continues. “So he was so young. And it really changed the way I looked at my instrument and in music. In every way. It was a profound moment for me, so I’m not kidding. That’d be like a wish list thing.”
Mulroney first saw the acclaimed musician play in the summer of 1970 when he was 7 years old. He later e-mailed us to stress that he has been practicing every day for this potential duet and any help “provided for this dream endeavor would be deeply appreciated.”
Meanwhile, the “August: Osage County” star is currently appearing in Season Two of the Amazon series “Hanna,” based on the 2011 film of the same name starring Oscar-nominated actress Saoirse Ronan. And Mulroney confesses that it’s “very fun” to play the show’s bad guy, the villainous John Carmichael.
“And in this case to portray, really, an oppressor. More than just a bad guy,” he continued, “someone who is manipulating and controlling not only somebody’s entire life but actually their DNA makeup is also fun.”
He sees the show as on-point for these times because “a lot of people are also thinking about how to take down unfair institutions that are suppressing their freedom. That’s all over the show … the broader scope of the piece really has some important things to share.”
