Doctor Strange’s Benedict Cumberbatch On The Character’s New Direction

Benedict Cumberbatch is looking to his future in the MCU, discussing how Doctor Strange is moving in a new direction after the conclusion to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

In amongst the reality-hopping life-or-death stakes of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the film also found time to address and reassess Stephen Strange’s relationship with Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams). By the film’s end, Strange is ready to move on from his past love.

One symbol of the pair’s lost relationship and Strange’s struggle to move forward is the broken watch gifted to him by Christine, which he is seen still wearing by the end of the first film and then repairing and putting away at the end of Multiverse of Madness.

Speaking to Oracle Time about Doctor Strange’s timepiece, Benedict Cumberbatch talked about the symbolism of Strange repairing the watch in Multiverse of Madness and what it means for his future.

The Doctor Strange actor revealed that he “had final say over the watch” and that “Rachel McAdams would have had some input too as it’s her character giving the watch.” Cumberbatch said that the watch “spoke to me of the sentiment between Strange and Christine.”

Talking about Strange holding onto the broken watch in the first film, Cumberbatch said:

“In the first film it was symbolic of the character and his relationship with Christine Palmer. It was very important in the fact that it stopped at the same time as his previous life in the car accident. And he holds on to it. Why does he hold on to it? Because he’s the Time Lord? No. It’s because he’s still.”

Going on to address Strange fixing the watch before putting it away in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the actor explained:

“It’s closure really. And to do that, he’s setting the timepiece free again. He’s making it work so that it can carry on without him. He puts it in the box. He doesn’t put it back on his wrist. He’s no longer the broken-hearted Stephen Strange, who didn’t get the girl. He’s a man who’s moving on to a new time and new adventure.”

In a post-credits scene, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness introduces Charlize Theron as the sorceress Clea, who recruits Strange to assist her in undoing an incursion caused by his actions. Given their romantic history in the comics, it looks like Strange is moving on to new adventures in more ways than one.
