East Hampton warns residents of ‘deceptive’ fundraising letter

The City of East Hampton is warning residents of a “deceptive” fundraising letter that’s been circulating within the city.

The US Deputy Sheriff’s Affiliation, a nonprofit out of Wichita, Kansas, is asking Hamptonites to contribute to the “Drive for America’s Police and Sheriff’s Emergency Tools Scarcity,” requesting donations to pay for bulletproof vests and physique armor for law enforcement officials. However city authorities have instructed locals, “This fundraising effort isn’t affiliated with our native police . . . Our division has not acquired, nor does it anticipate to obtain, tools donations from this group.”

David Hinners, director of the USDSA, denied any deception, telling us, “Nowhere does it say within the letter we’re doing fundraising for that space. We aren’t doing fundraising in that space.”

He additionally instructed us if the East Hampton cops want something, they will “get ahold of us to see in the event that they qualify for any of our applications.”
