Harvey Weinstein compares #MeToo to communist blackballing at sentencing

Convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein wallowed in self-pity at his sentencing, evaluating the #MeToo motion to the communist-era blacklisting hysteria.

“You already know, I simply — coping with the hundreds of women and men who’re shedding due course of, I’m anxious about this nation in a way, too,” Weinstein stated Wednesday shortly earlier than he was handed his 23-year jail time period for raping an aspiring actress and sexually abusing a manufacturing assistant.

Whereas ladies’s rights advocates have hailed the case for bringing a strong man to justice for his sexual misconduct, Weinstein likened his trial to the mid-century communist scare that led to the blacklisting of stars and politicians.

“I’m anxious there’s a repeat of the blacklist there was within the 1950s, when a number of males like myself, Dalton Trumbo, one of many nice examples, didn’t work, went to jail as a result of folks thought they have been communists,” he went on.

“It’s improper, you recognize, and that’s what is going on,” he went on. “Everyone is on some form of blacklist.”

The disgraced movie-mogul who produced blockbuster hits and Oscar-winning movies claimed he had no actual sway within the business — {that a} perceived energy was constructed up by the roughly 80 ladies who’ve accused him of sexual assault or harassment.

“Miramax at the peak of its fame was a smaller firm than by far any Walt Disney, any Sony, Paramount,” Weinstein stated, noting the manufacturing firm he based together with his brother again in 1979.

“I couldn’t blackball anyone, as a result of if I stated, ‘Don’t use that actress, the fellows at Warner Brothers would say I’m going to use it to regardless of that bastard, no matter,’” he went on. “That’s what it was. Nevertheless it turned blown up like energy, energy, energy.”

All six of Weinstein’s accusers attended his sentencing in Manhattan Supreme Court docket and have been seated within the entrance row.

The state Division of Corrections and Neighborhood Supervision stated Weinstein can be transferred out of the town’s jail system and to the state jail system “within the close to future.”
