Liberty University has chosen Dr. Jerry Prevo, chairman of the varsity’s board of trustees, as its acting president after inserting longtime president Jerry Falwell Jr. on indefinite leave.
Prevo’s appointment comes days after Falwell, who had served as president and chancellor since 2007, discovered himself embroiled in controversy for posting racy images on Instagram, particularly one displaying his arm round a girl who was not his spouse, along with his pants unzipped and his abdomen uncovered.
Prevo, who has served on the non-public evangelical Christian college’s board of trustees since 1996, stated in an announcement Monday, “I need to thank my fellow board members for having confidence that I may very well be entrusted with the duty of serving because the Acting President throughout this time of Jerry Falwell Jr.’s indefinite leave of absence.”
Prevo has been chairman of the board since 2003. He beforehand served because the senior pastor of Anchorage Baptist Temple in Anchorage, Alaska, the place he labored for 47 years. He had not too long ago retired.
“We have now a world-class management crew at Liberty University who will help me in operating our operations on a day-to-day foundation and fulfilling our religious mission unabated: Coaching Champions for Christ. In the meantime, Falwell advised WLNI radio station final week that the lady within the controversial picture was his spouse’s assistant, and the picture was taken at a dressing up occasion.
“It was bizarre as a result of she’s pregnant so she couldn’t get her [shorts] up and I used to be like, making an attempt to love — I’ve a pair of denims I haven’t worn in a very long time so I couldn’t get mine zipped both. So I simply put my stomach out like hers,” he stated, explaining the picture.
“I’ve apologized to all people,” he added.
After the interview, the varsity’s board of trustees met Friday and requested that Falwell take leave, “to which he has agreed, efficient instantly.”
Falwell’s father, the late evangelist Rev. Jerry Falwell, based the college.
