A deleted scene from Thor: Love and Thunder reveals an alternate role for Russell Crowe’s Zeus.
Thor: Love and Thunder released in theaters two months ago, and Taika Waititi’s sequel to his 2017 film Ragnarok had many deleted scenes. Interestingly enough, a deleted scene featuring Russell Crowe as Zeus showcases a very different version of the character than what was shown in the official theatrical cut.
In the deleted scene that you can watch below, we see Thor (Chris Hemsworth) having a conversation with Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). The deleted scene is titled, “Fighting For You,” and features a heartfelt, yet very humorous exchange between the couple, who is then interrupted by Zeus (Russell Crowe).
In the official theatrical cut of Thor: Love and Thunder, Russell Crowe’s Zeus is shown to be a brash minor antagonist for the God of Thunder to face. The character was played up for laughs in a sequence that has been subject to heavy criticism since the film released back in July. The character wouldn’t appear again until a mid-credits scene in which he calls on his son Hercules (Brett Goldstein) to go after Thor.
In this deleted scene, Russell Crowe’s Zeus seemingly maintains a warmer sentiment towards both Thor and Jane Foster, hinting at a less antagonistic dynamic, while still maintaining Taika Waititi and the broader MCU’s sense of humor.
Here is the synopsis for Thor: Love and Thunder:
The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.
Directed by Taika Waititi and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, the Thor sequel stars Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Jaimie Alexander, Taika Waititi, Russell Crowe, Natalie Portman, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper.
