Top Gun: Maverick is on track to surpass Black Panther at the US box office.
Paramount Pictures’ Top Gun: Maverick has been the undisputed box office champion of 2022 so far, and although the film was just released digitally for at-home viewing, the film continues to pull in some strong box office numbers. And with this Labor Day weekend’s estimates, it appears that it will be passing Marvel Studios’ Black Panther at the box office.
Top Gun: Maverick is expected to win the box office weekend again, and is on track to gross beyond the $700 million mark, which Black Panther sits at. It is also breaking unique records that include both topping the digital sales charts and the box office at the same time.
With Top Gun: Maverick set to top Black Panther at the box office, this goes to show how massive of a film Tom Cruise and Paramount Pictures have been holding onto amidst multiple delays due to the pandemic. It’s safe to say that the investment was well worth it, and the fact that the summer’s biggest film is not one released by Marvel Studios should encourage rival studios to produce more earnest blockbusters that dare to depart from the expected formula of the most popular franchise in the world.
Here is the synopsis for the film:
After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.” Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski from a script written by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie, based on a story by Peter Craig and Justin Marks, Top Gun: Maverick stars Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris and Val Kilmer.
Top Gun: Maverick is now playing in theaters and is available to own on Digital HD. Be sure to stay tuned for all the latest news on the Tom Cruise film’s performance at the box office, as well as the future of Black Panther, and subscribe to our YouTube channel for more video content!
