Ming-Na Wen Says The Book Of Boba Fett Tone Is Like The Godfather

Ming-Na Wen compared the tone of The Book of Boba Fett to that of The Godfather.

Lucasfilm’s second live-action Star Wars series The Book of Boba Fett will explore a new story regarding the famed Bounty Hunter (Temeura Morrison) who made his canonical debut in the franchise back in 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back. He will be joined alongside Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) as they venture to make it big in the galaxy’s underworld now that they have taken new ownership over Jabba the Hutt’s territory.

Given the nature of the Star Wars underworld and the seedy underbelly that has been exemplified by the legacy of Jabba the Hutt, numerous Bounty Hunters and the earlier adventures of Han Solo and Lando Calrissian among others, there’s elements of both old school westerns and gangster films like The Godfather that come into play. However, Ming-Na Wen recently compared and contrasted the differences between The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, placing them both in those respective genres, with this new series fitting more towards a gangster story. According to this excerpt from Entertainment Weekly:

“If The Mandalorian is a planet-hopping, gunslinging Western, Wen describes Boba Fett as ‘more like a take on gangster movies’ — less The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, more The Godfather.”

The unique thing about the Star Wars franchise is that although at its core, it’s a story that blends both science fiction and fantasy, it also spans other genres amidst the galaxy far, far away. The Mandalorian clearly follows a gunslinger western type of story whereas based on Ming-Na Wen’s description, The Book of Boba Fett will follow the tradition of gangster movies akin to The Godfather. After all, George Lucas himself contributed to Francis Ford Coppola’s 1972 landmark film, so paying tribute to that piece of cinema feels oh-so fitting.

Here is the synopsis for the series:

The Book of Boba Fett, a thrilling Star Wars adventure, finds legendary bounty hunter Boba Fett and mercenary Fennec Shand navigating the Galaxy’s underworld when they return to the sands of Tatooine to stake their claim on the territory once ruled by Jabba the Hutt and his crime syndicate.

Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Robert Rodriguez, and Kathleen Kennedy are all executive producers on The Mandalorian spinoff with episodes directed by Rodriguez, Favreau, Filoni, and Bryce Dallas Howard. The series stars Temuera Morrison, Ming-Na Wen, and Jennifer Beals.

The Book of Boba Fett will arrive on December 29 on Disney Plus.
