Neil Gaiman On Why Tom Ellis Didn’t Reprise Lucifer Role For Sandman

Neil Gaiman has revealed why Tom Ellis did not reprise his role as Lucifer for the upcoming Netflix show, The Sandman.

In what feels like an eternity ago, Netflix officially picked up The Sandman series. This followed literally decades worth of attempts to make a live-action adaptation of the character a reality. One of the earliest cast members added to the series was Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer. The show has faced a degree of backlash for this casting which Neil Gaiman has frequently shut down. One such commenter wondered why Tom Ellis from the show Lucifer didn’t reprise his role for the new Netflix show.

How Lucifer Came To Be

In the comics, Lucifer is actually a spinoff from The Sandman series and launched after the initial series wrapped up. In one of the book’s most unexpected twists, Lucifer decided to give up their lordship in hell and eventually went on to open a nightclub in Los Angles. The Tom Ellis show was specifically a loose adaption of the spinoff comic.

In a recent post, Neil Gaiman revealed why Tom Ellis didn’t reprise his role for The Sandman. Specifically, it would have made the new Netflix show a prequel to Lucifer and they weren’t interested in making that:

Here is the synopsis for Netflix’s The Sandman:

A rich blend of modern myth and dark fantasy in which contemporary fiction, historical drama and legend are seamlessly interwoven, The Sandman follows the people and places affected by Morpheus, the Dream King, as he mends the cosmic — and human — mistakes he’s made during his vast existence.

The series stars Tom Sturridge, Gwendoline Christie, Vivienne Acheampong, Boyd Holbrook, Charles Dance, Asim Chaudhry, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Jenna Coleman, Joely Richardson, David Thewlis, Stephen Fry, and Patton Oswalt.

Wonder Woman co-writer Allan Heinberg serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer on Sandman. In addition to their duties as writers, Neil Gaiman and David S. Goyer are also on board as executive producers.
