Hit sci-fi sitcom “Rick and Morty” has sparked outrage over a tone-deaf joke in regards to the 9/11 terror assaults in a latest episode of the Grownup Swim comedy.
The controversial gag happens in “Promortyus,” the seventh episode of Season 4, which aired Sunday, and depicts the titular characters battling alien adversaries. Upon approaching two enemy buildings that resemble New York Metropolis’s Twin Towers, Rick and Morty fly across the towers and assault a harbor as a substitute.
“Actually, I’m happy with us for not …,” Rick says.
“Completely, would have been low cost,” Morty retorts, to which Rick provides, “Low-hanging fruit. We’re higher than that.”
Whereas flying above the harbor, although, the duo determine to re-create the Pearl Harbor bombings and joke about it later on the dinner desk.
“We virtually did a 9/11, we went with the Pearl Harbor. We’re fairly stylish,” Morty says.
Not all “Rick and Morty” fans discovered the joke stylish, taking to Twitter to specific disbelief.
“Is Rick and Morty nonetheless doing 9/11 jokes?” wonders one social media critic. “As a result of wow, that’s so humorous in 2020.”
One other disillusioned fan feedback, “no they didnt … omg 9/11.”
“Not Rick and Morty with the 9/11 jokes,” laments one other.
