Robert Pattinson’s The Batman had an impressive debut at the domestic box office on opening day.
The long-awaited new DC Comics film The Batman finally opened in theaters yesterday. The film, which stars Robert Pattinson as the titular Caped Crusader made an impressive $57 million on Friday, with an expected 3-day total of around $120 million come Sunday – a number slightly above previous expectations.
The box office success of The Batman is also notable, given that all of Warner Bros. Pictures’ 2021 releases were also available day-and-date on HBO Max free-of-charge while also playing in theaters. This is the first major release from the studio in 2022, with the film debuting exclusively in theaters first, with its expected availability on HBO Max roughly 45 days after its theatrical debut.
The Batman’s box office performance so far is quite impressive, given that the character’s reputation in recent years amongst audiences has been mixed. A decade after the conclusion of Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed Dark Knight trilogy, the Caped Crusader was featured in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League to a less-than-stellar response from critics and audiences alike. Also, the fact that the film is nearly 3 hours and is significantly darker than the more family-friendly Spider-Man: No Way Home is an impressive feat.
The impressive box office showing so far bodes well for both director Matt Reeves and star Robert Pattinson. The duo, along with much of the expected returning cast members hope to develop at least two more theatrical films in a trilogy, along with a slew of new spinoff series on HBO Max.
Here is the synopsis for Robert Pattinson’s The Batman:
Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) — amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.
When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.
Directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as the titular hero, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál, with Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin.
