The post-credits stinger for The Batman starring Robert Pattinson is puzzling fans.
With the long-awaited release of The Batman starring Robert Pattinson, audiences are immersing themselves into Matt Reeves’ exciting new take on the Caped Crusader and Gotham City. The film, which is the most detective-driven and downright psychologically disturbing Batman movie to date, features a haunting portrayal of The Riddler played by Paul Dano, whom leaves numerous clues for Batman and Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) to uncover.
SPOILER WARNING: The article dives into the post-credits stinger for The Batman.
The Batman doesn’t end with the usual post-credits stinger that fans have come to expect from typical superhero movie fare as seen in most Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Extended Universe films. Rather than having a sequence that either teases a sequel outright, or serves as a fun tag for loyal audiences, we receive a cryptic message in green text as typed by The Riddler that reads, “Good bye?” that flashes out with a URL to rataalada.com, which was one of the few riddles solved in the film itself.
Upon fans’ initial viewing of The Batman post-credits stinger, those who go onto the URL in question can find themselves on a cryptic tie-in website that mimics the one seen in the film. As of the publishing of this article, the mysterious progress meter is at 27%, with the result upon completion unknown at this time. However, when clicking “CLICK FOR REWARD,” you are redirected to another one of The Riddler’s messages, teasing that “It’s not over yet.”
A video is also featured, in which we see footage from The Riddler’s revelatory video exposing Thomas Wayne during his mayoral campaign in 2001. The website will ask viewers, “Do you think Thomas Wayne is a great man? Y/N.” Those who answer yes are given the following answer:
“Beware of absolute power. It corrupts unconditionally.”
Whereas those who answer no are given this:
“You’re right to be untrusting of the rich and powerful. All who think they are great always hide secrets.”
This particular interactive promotional campaign for The Batman including this post-credits stinger harkens back to one of Matt Reeves’ previous films, Cloverfield. The film, whose initial teaser didn’t even feature the official title but rather the release date of “1-18-08” was notable for its interactive and cryptic marketing. It’s only a matter of time before we find out what happens after the progress meter for this URL goes to 100%. While this post-credits stinger is a departure from what most fans conventionally expect, it sure brings back the audience interactivity in a way that’s been mostly missing for quite sometime.
Here is the synopsis for Robert Pattinson’s The Batman:
Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) — amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.
When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.
Directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as the titular hero, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál, with Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin.
