Avengers star Dave Bautista suits up as Bane for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad in this concept image.
Following his initial firing from Disney, James Gunn was tapped by Warner Bros. and DC Films to write and direct The Suicide Squad, a standalone sequel to the 2016 film by David Ayer. When it was announced, Avengers star Dave Bautista expressed interest in joining the film’s cast, having shown solidarity for his Guardians of the Galaxy director in what he deemed to be an unjust firing. With that in mind, many fans have often had the former wrestler-turned-actor as a top contender to play Bane.
In the following concept image, Dave Bautista is imagined as the new Bane for the DCEU, giving fans an idea on what he could potentially bring to James Gunn’s Suicide Squad:
If he were to play Bane, Dave Bautista would be the first actor to play the character in a live-action DC Comics film since Tom Hardy’s performance in The Dark Knight Rises. The latter performance is remembered for Bane’s physical intimidation as well as his iconic voice that was subject to much parody upon the film’s release in 2012.
Dave Bautista ultimately chose to work with Zack Snyder in the Netflix original film Army of the Dead instead of The Suicide Squad. Despite of this, fans are still hopeful that he could portray Bane in the DCEU – particularly under the direction of James Gunn, or in the newly-established Gotham City as seen in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. Either way, it would be fun to see the Avengers actor be the latest to cross between both bridges of Marvel and DC and portray Bane, whether it’d be in the more humorous world of James Gunn, or even in the darker elements of Matt Reeves’ Gotham City.
Here is the synopsis for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad:
Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.
Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Peter Capaldi, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Michael Rooker, Pete Davidson, Nathan Fillion, Sean Gunn, Flula Borg, Mayling Ng, Tinashe Kajese, Steve Agee, Jennifer Holland, Alice Braga, Juan Diego Botto, Joaquin Cosio, Storm Reid, and Taika Waititi.
The Suicide Squad is now available on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD.
