A sequel is officially in the works for Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, under the title Joker: Folie à Deux, with Lady Gaga reportedly in the running to star as Harley Quinn.
It is still early days for the Joker sequel, which is yet to enter production, but a new concept design imagines how Lady Gaga might look as the Joker’s infamous sidekick. Joker: Folie à Deux is reportedly a musical, so the singer/actress would be an excellent choice for the role.
Harley Quinn has recently been portrayed in the DCEU by Margot Robbie, who appeared as the character in two Suicide Squad movies and Birds of Prey. With Joker set in its own timeline, Lady Gaga would be playing a different version of the psychologist-turned-supervillain.
Joker finished with Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck in a secure psychiatric ward, having embraced his murderous Joker identity. This ending would lead neatly into a story involving the character’s relationship with psychologist Harleen Quinzel.
It seems likely that Joker: Folie à Deux will see Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn start out as a psychologist working with Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker in Arkham Asylum – or Arkham State Hospital, as it was rendered in Joker. The film would then likely follow the Joker’s corruption of her, transforming her into his villainous sidekick.
A new concept design by artist “spdrmnkyxxiii” offers a look at how Lady Gaga may look as both the psychologist Harleen Quinzel and the villainous Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie à Deux. Check out the stunning artwork, which mashes the two looks together, below:
Given the first film’s flair for playing with notions of what is real and what is imagined, Joker: Folie à Deux‘s unexpected genre jump into the world of musicals will be likely be another way of exploring the distorted perceptions of Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck. It also allows Lady Gaga to do what she does best as Harley Quinn.
Here is the official synopsis for Joker:
Director Todd Phillips’ “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.
Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.
Joker is available on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the planned Joker sequel with Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
