Chris Columbus had everything to deliver a delight of whodunit English: a warm decor, smart retirees, a royal cast. Instead, his film quickly took on Sunday evening thriller: polished, quiet … and a little designed. Our four investigators form a nice little club, as lukewarm as a cup of forgotten tea in the common room of Ephad.
There are a few charming moments, and Coopers Chase, the hero’s residence, is a comfortable enough setting to spend two hours of streaming. But we quickly understand that the film will never go beyond the stage of the promises of the title. The investigation is undergoing its course, softly, without real surprise. The revelation of the various crimes exposed is even particularly deceptive. We understand that Chris Columbus seeks to summon the spirit of Cozy British mysteries – where human warmth and malice mingle with the puzzles. But the script lacks edge, comedy of mind.
The 5 -star cast does what it can with the limited material that is given to it. Helen Mirren et Pierce Brosnan Obviously have fun (more than us), and even meet the road to Geoff Bell.
