Nicole Hanna-Jones, a reporter for the newspaper The New York Times, came up with the idea of reevaluating the impact that slavery was on American society and life about four years ago. The name of the project, 1619, comes from the year that chattel slavery began. Nicole won the Pulitzer Prize after the issue came out, and copies of this newspaper were sold.

However, the project got a lot of bad reviews. Former US President Donald Trump called the show “poisonous propaganda,” and former US House Speaker Newt Gingrich said the plan was completely false. This didn’t stop the project from being a hit, though, as it would be shown on Hulu four years later as a series.
