‘The Boys’ Star Erin Moriarty Calls Out Misogynistic Online Trolls

Erin Moriarty has taken to social media to share and add to an article calling out the wave of misogynistic trolling that has been aimed at her following her role in The Boys.

Moriarty plays Annie January, aka Starlight, in The Boys. She was introduced in the first season as the young new member of superhero team the Seven. Throughout the series, her story has been one of a young woman contending with being silenced and objectified through her role in the public eye, serving as commentary on real-world misogyny and toxicity in fan culture.

Apparently the series’ message went over the heads of some viewers, who have taken to trolling Erin Moriarty with intense criticisms over her appearance and her role in the series.

Posting on Instagram, Erin Moriarty shared extracts from a fan article titled “#IStandWithStarlight?: The betrayal of Erin Moriarty by The Boys ‘fans’” and added her own thoughts.

In agreement with the points made in the article, Moriarty said “I do feel silenced. I do feel dehumanized. I do feel paralyzed,” pointing out “this kind of trolling is exactly what this role (Annie) would speak out against.”

The post quickly garnered comments of support, including ones from her co-stars Antony Starr and Jack Quaid. To see alleged fans of The Boys responding in such a way to an actress from the series is devastating, especially an actress playing a character who is specifically designed to show how destructive and damaging such treatment of women is.

This sort of trolling is never acceptable and it is heartbreaking to see it continuing in online spaces that should be filled with positivity for fans’ shared love of their favorite series. Erin Moriarty’s powerful response shows such trolling for what it is and speaks to a strength of character that outshines all the trolls she has had to endure.
