Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man Censored In UK’s ITV 2 For Homophobic Line

Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man got censored in the UK’s ITV 2 for a line now deemed homophobic.

When it comes to the debates regarding which iteration of Spider-Man on the big screen is the best, many would still contend that Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire‘s films are still the best portrayal. Some who disagree with this notion claim that it is due to the films being too dated, especially given that they were products of the early-to-mid 2000’s.

While some may claim that Tobey Maguire‘s Spider-Man movies are dated, others defend it as qualities that help make those films stand out even after all these years. For all the merits that Marc Webb and Jon Watts have in their respective films, no iteration has quite the directorial stamp that Sam Raimi has, and his sense of humor and filmmaking sensibilities are a standout to this day.

However, there is at least one moment from the original Tobey Maguire Spider-Man film that has admittedly not aged well. In the sequence where he faces off against Bonesaw (Randy Savage) in a cagematch, he clings to the wall when he utters the insult, “That’s a cute outfit. Did your husband give it to you?”

This line is problematic given that it relied on homophobia for an insult. Interestingly enough, this scene had part of that line censored after Tobey Maguire says, “That’s a cute outfit.” You can see in the video below, captured by a viewer of the UK’s ITV 2, in which the broadcast of Spider-Man removed the husband line:

Tobey Maguire reprised his role in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Here is the synopsis:

For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero’s identity is revealed, bringing his Super Hero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk. When he enlists Doctor Strange’s help to restore his secret, the spell tears a hole in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who’ve ever fought a Spider-Man in any universe. Now, Peter will have to overcome his greatest challenge yet, which will not only forever alter his own future but the future of the Multiverse.

Directed by Jon Watts from a script written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, No Way Home stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jacob Batalon, Jon Favreau, Jamie Foxx, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, Benedict Wong, Tony Revolori, Marisa Tomei, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire.
