Zoe Kravitz On Not Auditioning For Catwoman In ‘The Dark Knight Rises’

Zoe Kravitz reflected on not being able to audition for Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises.

It’s been 10 years since we last saw Selina Kyle AKA Catwoman on the big screen. The last time we saw her was in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, in which she was played by Academy Award-winner Anne Hathaway. 10 years later, Zoe Kravitz has dons the iconic whip in Matt Reeves’ The Batman.

When The Dark Knight Rises was still casting for its new Catwoman, Zoe Kravitz was rejected from auditioning for the role for the problematic reason that claimed that the approach for the film was to not go “urban.” While promoting The Batman, she reflected on that experience with The Guardian:

“I don’t know if it came directly from Chris Nolan. I think it was probably a casting director of some kind, or a casting director’s assistant… Being a woman of colour and being an actor and being told at that time that I wasn’t able to read because of the colour of my skin, and the word urban being thrown around like that, that was what was really hard about that moment.”

Zoe Kravitz’s portrayal of Selina Kyle AKA Catwoman has received much praise from critics and audiences alike, with many believing that her performance in The Batman stands as its own alongside the likes of Michelle Pfeiffer in Batman Returns and Anne Hathaway in The Dark Knight Rises. Some are also hopeful that with numerous HBO Max series set in Matt Reeves’ Gotham City in the works, Zoe Kravitz’s Selina Kyle/Catwoman would also have one of her own. Only time will tell.

Here is the synopsis for The Batman:

Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) — amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.

When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoe Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.

Directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as the titular hero, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál, with Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin.

The Batman will hit theaters on March 4, 2022. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding Zoe Kravitz’s future as Catwoman, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
